It’s the New Year and the time when we all try to start fresh and feel and look our best, so shouldn’t that include your toenails? Fungal nails are a condition that affects many, but it is often overlooked, or people attempt to treat it without the help of podiatrists. But here at Houston Foot & Ankle Care, we can help your nails heal!

What is it?

Fungal nail is an infection that develops underneath the nails caused by fungi. If ignored and infection spreads, it can cause pain, a foul smell, brittleness and discoloration in the toenails. Fungus grows in warm, damp conditions, so the toenails are especially susceptible in areas where you may walk barefoot, such as locker rooms or showers. People who have compromised immune systems, or sweat a lot on their feet are also vulnerable.

Diagnosis and treatment

A podiatrist can diagnose fungal nails by a physical examination and taking a nail culture to determine the exact cause. There are over-the-counter topical creams and oral antibiotics, but they usually take several months to completely beat the infection. Houston Foot & Ankle Care has state-of-the-art laser treatment technology to pinpoint the exact location of the infection and cure it quickly without side effects. The laser treatment is safe and fast, taking an average of 10 minutes per session with little to no pain, and you can achieve clear healthy nails much more quickly and effectively than the alternative treatments. The laser treatment is done right here at our office in Southwest Houston by our experienced podiatrist, Dr. Gabriel Maislos.
