Pros and Cons of Achilles Tendon Stretches

When athletes, and especially runners, stretch tight calf muscles, they may be doing more harm than good to the Achilles tendon, experts say. Short active stretches may be more beneficial than passive stretching, where the heel is pressed downward and held for an extended period of time. Research has shown an overload on the Achilles tendon can cause it to become inflamed. When a typical calf/Achilles tendon stretch is performed, it’s normal for the tendon to press against the heel bone. However, when this position is gained too forcefully or sustained for too long it can become a problem. In fact, it is believed that overdoing a heel drop stretch of the Achilles tendon and calf can actually contribute to Achilles tendonitis. For this reason, experts recommend a heel drop flat against the floor rather than from a stair step, where the heel goes below the horizontal plane. Instead, massage, foam rolling, and double heel raises can help do the job of relieving tightness. For more detailed guidance on how to avoid Achilles tendonitis, please consult a podiatrist.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Dorsal Foot Pain

The foot is an intricate body part with 26 bones, 30 joints, and over 100 ligaments, muscles, and tendons. With all that could go wrong with feet, it may be difficult to determine why one has pain on the top or dorsal part of your foot. Symptoms accompanying dorsal foot pain include redness, warmth, or swelling in the forefoot or toes, sensitivity to putting on shoes or socks, and a limited range of motion in the foot and toes. Possible causes of top-of-the-foot pain may be toe stress fractures, gout, peripheral neuropathy, or osteoarthritis. Injuries can happen from a specific event or from excessive repetitive activities. Pain can also result from other health conditions, like gout, osteoarthritis, two different forms of arthritis, or diabetes. Depending on the underlying cause, avoiding irritating activities, resting, and being on top of health issues can help alleviate foot pain. If you have dorsal foot pain that does not go away or worsens, seeing a podiatrist can help get to the root of the problem and provide suggestions for relief.

Athlete’s Foot and Nail Salons

Athlete’s foot can undoubtedly be an annoyance, especially to those who care about maintaining healthy feet. This foot condition can develop when a fungal infection causes a rash to form between the toes of the feet. One place where an individual may be susceptible to athlete’s foot is the nail salon. For example, when someone receives a pedicure at a nail salon, they may be at an increased risk of contracting a fungal infection if the practitioner uses tools that were used on other clients’ feet. Specifically, when receiving a pedicure, one might consider requesting a new pumice stone be used on the feet. You might even think about bringing your own tools to ensure that no fungus is being spread to your feet. Contact a podiatrist today to learn more about protecting your feet from athlete’s foot.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Houston Foot and Ankle Care.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

The Feet May Change Shape as Aging Occurs

Elderly patients may find that life is easier when attention is paid to their feet. The shape of the feet can change as the aging process occurs, and balance and range of motion may also be affected. Seniors' feet may flatten or become wide. Injuries may happen to the bones and joints as the fatty padding wears down. It is wise to practice elderly foot care tips, and the first step to implement is washing and drying the feet, followed by applying a good moisturizer. Foot conditions like ingrown toenails may be avoided when the nails are trimmed straight across and not too short. Some patients develop bed sores on their feet from resting them on a pillow for extended periods. This can be alleviated by lifting the ankles away from the pillow. Additional methods can be implemented to practice proper foot care, and it is suggested that a podiatrist is contacted who can offer guidance.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Inner Loop, Southwest, Greater Heights, and Pearland, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Surgery for a Jones Fracture

A fracture that occurs in the bone that is found on the outside of the foot is known as a Jones fracture. It is considered to be a common foot injury, and can gradually happen from excessive repeated motion, or possibly from a sudden injury. It may take longer to heal than other fractures, which may be a result of less blood in this part of the foot. If the break is severe, surgery may be necessary for permanent healing. This is accomplished by placing a screw into the affected bone and staying in place as healing occurs. The screw is helpful in bending and twisting the bones after the healing process is over, and there may be various ways to secure the screw. The recovery time is approximately seven weeks, and it is helpful to keep weight off of the foot for the majority of that time. If you would like more information about how surgery is performed for a Jones fracture, please confer with a podiatrist who can answer any questions and concerns you may have.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists of Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Inner Loop, Southwest, Greater Heights, and Pearland, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
