The Achilles tendon is a fibrous band of tissue located in the back of the leg that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. This tendon is a frequent area of injury among people who play sports. Injuries that may affect the Achilles tendon include Achilles tendinitis, tendinosis, or rupture. To diagnose an Achilles tendon injury, your podiatrist will complete a thorough physical examination. The doctor may do a Thompson test, in which they squeeze the calf to assess the integrity of the Achilles tendon, and may ask you to do exercises such as leg lifts, hops, or jumps to see which activities cause pain, as well as the severity and exact location of the pain. Diagnostic imaging tests such as an MRI or ultrasound may be ordered to rule out other conditions or to get a detailed view of the injury. The doctor will also take a medical history and ask you to describe your symptoms. If you suspect that you may have injured your Achilles tendon, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Foot pain is a common ailment among many patients, and there are several reasons why this can occur. Foot sprains can cause severe pain and discomfort, and can happen as a result of tearing or overstretching the ligaments. Plantar fasciitis affects the heel and arch of the foot, and it can cause difficulty walking and completing daily activities. Some patients experience tarsal tunnel syndrome, and symptoms of this condition can consist of a tingling or numbing sensation in the bottom of the foot. Charcot arthropathy of the foot can cause the bones in the foot and ankle to weaken. Any type of foot pain requires a consultation with a podiatrist, who can effectively diagnose and treat your pain.

Signs and Causes of Bunions

A very common foot condition that causes a bony lump to appear on the base of the big toe is known as a bunion. Bunions occur because the joint is pulled out of alignment, causing the big toe to turn towards the rest of the toes. Bunions tend to worsen over time and common symptoms can include a deformity in the joint of the big toe, a bony lump, pain, redness, swelling, or an overlapping of the big toe over the smaller toes. Bunions can have a variety of causes, such as wearing shoes that don’t fit correctly, arthritis, old age, and even genetics. Bunions can be treated both surgically or non-surgically through methods such as orthotics, or pain relief medicine. If you are experiencing a painful bunion, consulting with a podiatrist is suggested in order to find a treatment method that is best for you.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Inner Loop, Southwest, Greater Heights, and Pearland, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Preventing Falls in Children

Falls are a leading cause of injury for not just older adults, but also for children. In fact, falls are the leading cause of injury in children from birth to about 19 years of age. Falls can result in a variety of foot and ankle injuries, from sprains to fractures and beyond. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent your child from falling and incurring a serious injury. If your child plays on a playground, check the surface under the playground to ensure that it is soft and safe, as well as supervise your child while they play. Make your home safer by using stair gates and guard rails to prevent your child from falling down the stairs. If your child participates in sports, make sure that they wear helmets, padding, or any other safety gear that the sport requires. If your child falls and injures their feet or ankles, take them to see a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat their condition.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Did My Child Break Their Ankle?

Broken ankles in children usually involve an injury from a sporting activity, fall, or other sudden movement or force that breaks, or fractures, any of the bones in the ankle: the two tall bones in the leg (tibia and fibula) and the foot (talus). Sometimes, fractures involve the soft cartilage (growth plate) at the end of the tibia and fibula. A child with a broken ankle may feel pain or warmth in the ankle, or may have a hard time moving their ankle. In some cases, a visible deformity may be visible. A podiatrist can examine and perform testing to ascertain the location, severity, and pattern of the fracture to determine the best course of treatment to ensure correct healing.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Houston Foot and Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
